The Montana Private Applicator Training (PAT) Program, coordinated by MSU Extension in partnership with the Montana Department of Agriculture (MDA), offers both initial pesticide licenses and renewal credits through the Stillwater County Extension Office.

To become a private pesticide applicator, you can either complete the 7-hour Initial Private Applicator Training course or pass the open-book Initial Pesticide Applicator exam with a score of at least 70%. The exam is available at local county extension offices and is administered by an MSU Pesticide Safety Education Program representative, typically the local County Extension Agent. You can contact your local extension office for the exam manual. It is recommended to pick your manual prior to taking the exam review the materials and study key concepts.

After obtaining your private applicator license, you must renew it every five years. Renewal requires earning six continuing education credits during the recertification cycle. Stillwater County’s current cycle began in 2023, with the next renewal deadline in 2027. These credits can be earned by attending MDA-approved courses, offered by MSU Extension and other authorized providers. Alternatively, you can renew your license by passing the closed-book Montana Private Applicator Exam with a score of 70% or better.
