Ceremonial and Smudging Accommodations

Ceremonial Accommodation Process
The ceremonial accommodation process at Montana State University is carried out by Campus Civil Rights (CCR). Ceremonial accommodations may include smudging or ceremonial and religious leave.
CCR is located on the 2nd floor fo the Swingle Building on the east side fo the SUB. Appointments can be made by calling (406) 994-1568 or emailing ccr@montana.edu.
Smudging Policy
CCR will discuss the ceremonial practices, such as smudging with cedar, sage, and sweetgrass, along with the fire safety risks associated with University Student Housing. In the same manner which medicines care for us, students who wish to practice smudging are responsible as a good relative to care in a reciprocal way. After speaking with CCR, documentation of approved ceremonial accommodations will be sent to the student, community director, and senior associate director of University Student Housing. This is a brief and one-time process.
